Bernard Simon Walter , Elisabeth Griener , Jean Walter , Marie Walter

Born in France, glassmaker Bernard Walter lived with his wife Elisabeth Griener in Varese near Lake Como from 1816 to 1829. From 1831 on, the family lived in a workers’ apartment in Wingen sur Moder in Alsace, where Bernard Walter worked as a glassmaker in the Hochberg glass factory. Two of his ten children, sons Laurent and Jean, also did the same job there. Daughter Marie worked for the Teutsch family of glass manufacturers for almost 50 years.

Elisabeth Griener and Bernard Walter both came from glassmaking families in the French regions of Ardennes and Northern Vosges, in Charleroi in Belgium, and around Lake Maggiore. The family name Walter appears as early as the 17th century. in the glassworks in Soucht (FR) and Saint-Louis (FR).
